What are BackLinks?
Backlinks are incoming links to a website or web page. The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website or page. In basic link terminology, a backlink is any link received by a web node (web page, directory, website, or top level domain) from another web node (Björneborn and Ingwersen, 2004). Search engines often use the number of backlinks that a website has as one of the factors for determining that website's search engine ranking. Websites often employ various techniques (called search engine optimization) to increase the number of backlinks pointing to their website.
There are various factors for determining the quality of a back link. Main factor is the page rank of the web page giving the back link. Back link from high ranked site is of good quality. Second factor is the subject of the pages which are linked by a back link. If both sites are discussing the same topic, the back link is relevant and of good quality. Third important thing is the anchor text of the back link. If the anchor text is related to the theme of the website (where the link is pointing), then it is called a good quality back link. PageRank is a link analysis algorithm that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set. So what is more important, backlinks or keywords? I always thought keywords weighed more ? I run http://shortstory.us.com and try to mention keyword "short story" as much as possible... should i be focused more on link swapping?

Casey Quinn.. backlinks and keywords are both very important and actually linked together, "keywords" is not about how much you mention them in your site but how much u mention them in ur backlinks!! so in ur case u gotta do ur backlinks with "short story" as the anchor text for ur backlinks!

I Think thats an excellent idea. Many commentators who are "link' interested and even find places where they can comment, won't do it. reason "no Follow". if spamming is filtered properly then its a win win sitatuin. The owner get content refreshed and commentator geta link. I think many will follow your pattarn.

I thought that if a site has loadsa out going links, it will loose its page rank, as opposed to a site with very few outgoing links.

I think these dofollow links are good way to promote blog. People are interested to comment texts.
But after all we have to remember that the most important thing in SEO is the content of your own site. Right?
I always use anchor test when I can. Though in the beginning I didnt have a clue and was only adding a link thinking that would help me rank better in the search engines. Currently looking for other targeted keywords that I can use for my Myspace Proxy that will gain me some more valuable traffic.
The majority factor for PR is backlinkm, backlink and backlink.....lol

TransMiami.. each internal page in ur site has its own PageRank, so backlinks to ur internal pages (indexed or still non-indexed yet) will increase the PR of ur internal pages!
