Allergic to Eating Noise?! Another Type of Misophonia! the Quickest Mood Changer!
This sound is so dangerous that it flies directly to my brain corrupting every single unit that it passes by, forcing me to focus on nothing in this damn big world but this creepy sound, causing a mix of the most awful feelings in the world creating a huge pressure, depress and stress on my whole body and brain, causing a serious damage as time passes for my cells that I unwillingly may start running out of the room so I can save the rest of my cells.
I would really prefer to hear the voice of a donkey singing rather than to hear this damn voice, even if I just thought about this noise it would make me probably shake :S lol, I guess this sound should be awarded with the "Quickest Mood Changer" ever instead of perfumes.
I may forcefully understand when this noise comes from old people having problems with teeth or so - but even though I believe they can move their mouths and eat while it's almost open without doing the lips touching thing that kills me the most – but I would never accept it to hear this sound from a kid or a young or any adult who has the basic manners.
I guess anyone having the mouth disaster should at least warn people, maybe holding a sign: "Warning, I eat like a camel!!" lol or "Please, Keep your self 2 Rooms away while I am eating!!" LOL ;p
You can find bellow what I found in some websites:
Hyperacusis is an abnormal intolerance to ordinary everyday sounds, which may develop in association with tinnitus related distress. Decreased sound tolerance is a general term covering hyperacusis, misophonia and phonophobia.
Misophonia is a strong dislike of sound and is widespread - almost everyone has a sound they have disliked at some time.
Phonophobia is a specific case of misophonia where people fear being exposed to a certain sound, often in the belief that it will damage the ear; make their tinnitus / hyperacusis worse; lead to uncontrollably high levels of anxiety. Phonophobia may develop in association with hyperacusis and tinnitus. Symptoms can range from mild through to severe to extreme
Individuals whose hearing sensitivity is focused on eating / chewing sounds: Some individuals are not sensitive to loud sounds (in other words they have normal loudness discomfort levels - LDL's) but they are unable to tolerate the sound of people eating or chewing. Oddly enough they have no problem tolerating the sound of their own eating. These individuals have a difficult time eating with their family and friends and some insist on eating all by themselves. They become enraged at meals and sometimes even start to shake or convulse.

hehe lol

welcome to the club ;p lol

lol ye they r the weirdos ;) walking out the room is gd but cotton wool in ears sort of works if you cant escape lol
I guess you'll have to start taking your meals through a straw then! :)
reminds me of the movie Kingpin where they were sitting in a restaurant and bill murrays character asked the other guy to take his bowl of cereal outside to finish eating. one of my favorite movies.
I can't believe I've finally found some people with the same problem as myself. I've had it since about 10 yrs old (34 years). I also can't cope with pouring water (glug glug) which started about 10 years ago. I find the greater the ambient noise around me, the better it is. e.g cope in restaurant much better than at family meal at home. It's caused my marriage and family life no end of problems.
The one thing that has helped is the support of a Hearing Therapist who provided me with a pair of noise generating hearing aids. They provided a background hiss that make the other noises more tolerable. May help others.
Any other advice would be appreciated.
I can't stand chewing sounds, tapping, pen clicking, loud clapping, etc. My husband thinks I'm just a big whiner; I explain it as having a low-functioning noise filter so he can be more empathetic than impatient with me. Here's the solution: keep the iPod on most of the time. I keep it on low, so I can still interact with people, but the music muffles unpleasant sounds so that I can cope.
I have severe reactions to paper rattling and people eating! Makes me want to run out of the room. I work in a small office and am now eating alone in my office rather than with the other 2 in the office. They don't understand, but I can't take the chip bags, zip lock bags, and chomping.
Interesting article here. I searchedd about this subject after hearing about a sound allergy on television. And it actually it exists!
I don't know if I'm suffering from it, I need to do some more research.
But I get really moody (and sometimes agressive or mad) from high pitched sounds. Think of the constant beep an old television makes, mobilephone chargers, loud cheap radio's and so on.
It's a real pain, and it's even worse when I'm tired. And there seems nothing you can do about it.
I've suffered from this since I was about 8 years old. It didn't make life with my family any easier, to say the least. There is actually a YahooGroup for people who suffer from this. Check out: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Soundsensitivity/?v=1&t=search&ch=web&pub=groups&sec=group&slk=10
Another person with hatred of (shudder) slurping and eating noises. AAAAArrrggghhh make it stop! It turns me instantly from peaceful person into quivering wreck of torment and rage. Family meals are definitely worse than restaurants, and I hate the sound of water pouring noisily - e.g. when someone is pouring tea into a cup. Eeeew! I think I am anticipating the slurping of the tea soon afterwards. Yuck!
Yesssss, The person who referred to the movie Kingpin NAILED it!
For me it isn't ALL eating noises, just the absurdly DISGUSTING eating noises!
Simple rule of thumb is - if there is food in your mouth, said mouth should be CLOSED!
Oh - and gum chewing should be a death penalty offense.
Eating is a nightmare with randomers. As well as chewing etc, I can't tolerate when people grind down on hard boiled sweets (candies). It sounds like broken teeth being ground down to powder. Rattling of plates, people rustling with plastic bags, breathing through nose while eating, sniffling, coughing, throat clearing, pen clicking, leg tapping and general fidgety, repetitive noises which break my concentration and drive me crackers! I could go on...I have to agree with the instant mood changing comment. I find this quite frightening. It feels comforting to know I am not the only one that feels rage simply because I have a negative emotional reaction to aural stimuli! some people have no manners, honestly...
Mouth sounds as people talk. I hear the saliva and tongue clicking! There is no escaping the horrible sound. The radio and t.v. only magnify these sounds. I also hear the clicking of consonants T,c,and k. They stand out from other sounds.strange yes!
this makes me so happy! i thought i was just a bitch when it came to people eating around me! omg i hate the sound of gum chewing/kissing/crunchy things, pretty much every sound aside from talking. it makes me hyper alert of my own chewing. i try to chew as quietly as possible!
glad to see so much info on-line regarding this "eating" issue. My brother has suffered with this disorder all of his life only to have been misdiagnosed and misunderstood. He suffers to the extreme sense of the word. He's has never been able to hold a job and has no contact with the real world. with all the years living with this, i know feel that it's attacked me on a smaller scale than him. i hate it but fine comfort knowing that others too are in the same boat. |Wish there was a cure!
